The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 2 is improved in almost every way over the first Galaxy fold. The phone features a 7.6-inch 120Hz display and utilizes a punch-hole design. The second screen has grown to 6.2 inches. Under the hood are Snapdragon 865+ with 12GB RAM and 256GB storage, and 4500mAh battery. The Galaxy Z Fold 2 supports 5G and has three cameras on the back. The Galaxy Z Fold 2 will be available on September 18 for the price of $2000.

Design

The Galaxy Fold 2 solves these design problems. It’s completely usable as a high-end smartphone when it’s closed, and its big 7.6-inch interior screen is the «ultra-thin glass» used on the Galaxy Z Flip. It’s not the same Gorilla Glass as on the front and back of the phone, but it also doesn’t look like it’s about to come apart or collect dirt in the edges. With your fingernail, you can feel where the screen’s outer plastic layer ends just before the bezel, but it isn’t visible and it won’t create a problem unless you’re actively trying to destroy the phone.

Photo – Amazing Design of Samsung Z Fold2

There’s a new hinge, using technology once again from the Z Flip with little rubber brushes inside that expel dust and dirt. Samsung says it’s good for 200,000 folds, and unlike with the first Fold, we haven’t heard about screens breaking. The phone still isn’t really dust or waterproof, but it’s better than the last one was.

There are quirks. The Z Fold 2 is still a bit like a 1980s laptop—genuinely useful, but clunky. At 6.3 by 2.7 by 0.7 inches and a hefty 9.9 ounces, the Z Fold 2 lands in your pocket with a thud. Several of its modes make you put it down on its screen, and for various reasons you end up wanting to rotate it in your hands a lot, which I’ll explain in a bit.

Screens: Fascinating New Design

One of the big problems with the original Fold was that its 4.6-inch external screen was just too small to do much with. 4.6 inches doesn’t sound that tiny, but the screen was very tall and narrow, and typing on it, especially, was a trial. The Z Fold 2’s new 6.2-inch, 2,260-by-816 external screen is a fully functioning window into the phone, able to run any app it needs to.

Performance and Software

The Galaxy Z Fold 2 has a Qualcomm Snapdragon 865+ processor, 12GB of RAM, and 256GB of non-expandable storage. It benchmarks like other top-of-the-line smartphones, with one quirk: It gets dramatically different benchmark results when it’s open as opposed to when it’s closed.

Cameras: Software Over Hardware

There are a lot of cameras on this phone. On the back, there are three 12-megapixel cameras—a regular f/1.8, an ultrawide f/2.2, and a 2x telephoto f/2.4. The inside and front face both have 10MP, f/2.2 cameras. All the cameras go up to 4K60 video recording.

In an era of high-megapixel cameras and AI-powered low-light modes, the physical cameras here don’t set themselves apart. In fact, they feel a lot like the Galaxy S9 or S10 cameras. In good light, they’re clear and sensitive. Indoors, you can see Samsung’s aggressive sharpening at work. I was surprised to compare the Z Fold 2 with the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra’s main camera in both good and low light and to see that at 1x, in 12-megapixel mode, the photos are almost exactly the same.

The 2x camera isn’t as good as the others or as its competitors. With an f/2.4 lens rather than an f/1.8 like on the Note 20 Ultra, it can strain in any kind of low light, and you can definitely see more aggressive noise reduction at work than on the Note 20 Ultra.

Networking: Top Class

There’s nothing to complain about in the Z Fold 2’s call quality and networking abilities. Call quality is excellent. You can hold the folded phone up to your head; it’s narrow enough to be easy to hold, although it’s heavy enough to be tiring to hold in place for more than about 15 minutes.

Innovation, Refined

I see a lot of phones, and many are similar. The Galaxy Z Fold 2 is not. I’m skeptical of super-expensive phones nowadays, but this one delivers the goods: a genuinely new use case and form factor, with impeccable flagship performance and a few quirks, but no bugs.

Do I have a wish list? Sure. It could be a bit thinner and lighter; Samsung could move the speakers; and I would love a better way of dealing with multi-windowing apps, although I can’t think of what it might be. I’d also like the phone to support wireless bands that don’t exist yet to make it more future-proof

9.5Expert Score
Based on our limited time with the Galaxy Z Fold 2, it appears that Samsung has addressed all the complaints users had with the original Fold. It’s still a premium device with a specific target market, but the larger screens and better software make it a more attractive proposition for those who want to get their hands on a folding phone.
